Chapter Nine
The days passed, and the thief did not come forward. Although it had been the talk of the school, the chatter started to die down a little. But Simone was well aware it centered on her, and stalked the halls with her head down and her eyes red. Maggie decided she really must have a word with her, although sheâd been putting it off. There had been no more cozy book swaps, either. She needed to find out what was up, she was neglecting her duty. But everyone was just so busy at this time of year.
At least nothing else had gone missing. A note had gone round the entire school, warning the pupils that there might be a thief on the loose, that valuables should be given to Matron and locked away, and that anyone with any information should come forward. No one had.
Meanwhile, Maggie had a more pressing problem on her hands. Stan was on his way. He was coming down for the week of the concert, then they could drive back up home together. The idea was he could see the Christmas show and a bit about her life, and hopefully they could spend some time together and get themselves back on track. Every time she thought about it, she felt so nervous. Partly because of what he might have been getting up to. And partly because of what had crossed her own mind. David hadnât emailed her since the rehearsal. Although disappointed, sheâd realized immediately what this meantâthat there was nothing going on, just her slightly feverish imagination. It must be true what they said about girls locked up in boarding schools. And it was absolutely ridiculous behavior; getting a silly crush on some teacher across the way, who probably got crushes from every child he ever met, girl or boy, she thought firmly. It was ridiculous and completely unprofessional; they were working together, and they had to stop it getting out of hand.
She and Stan had been together seven years. That was worth fighting for. And the idea of Stan cheating on her was the real issue, not distracting herself from her sadness by a dangerous flirtation.
The train from Glasgow took a long, long time to wind its way down the entire country and finally into Exeter. Maggie was standing at the barrier and saw Stan disembark a long way down the train. He was brushing a lot of pastry crumbs from his hoodie. Maggie looked at him as if through the eyes of a stranger. He looked the same as everâlong and skinny, except with an oddly protuberant pot belly that made him look a bit pregnant; spiky, gingerish hair, pale skin. He carried a large sports bag and a copy of Top Gear magazineâsurely it couldnât have been all heâd brought to read for a ten-hour train trip. Or maybe it was.
It seemed to take forever for him to make it to the gate. All around were couples falling into each otherâs arms, running up and crying with happiness and relief.
